Eglin AFB and Valparaiso, Florida: A Long History

Eglin Air Force Base owes its existence to the City of Valparaiso.  Mr. James Plew leased 137 acres to the city and a small airfield was built.  The field was subsequently given to the federal government and was used as an auxiliary field for Maxwell Army Air Base.   In 1937, Mr. Plew donated an additional 1500 acres for use as a gunnery range and the federal government made 340,000 acres of adjacent land available to the Army Air Corps. This entire area became Eglin Air Force Base.  Eglin and Valparaiso continue to enjoy a good relationship and many residents of the city are active duty or retired military members. This year, Eglin will produce an airshow; its first in more than 6 years.  If you live at 316 Ohio Ave, you’ll be a 7-minute drive from the show.  It promises to be good and will feature the F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightening II, both 5th generation fighters.

Valparaiso, Florida: Fishing village

I’d say nearly 60% of our residents actively fish in the Choctawahatchee Bay.  We are a bay-side Florida town, after all.  You can find flounder, redfish, crab, mullet and several other species right off the town’s three fishing piers.  One of the last remaining independent shrimpers in the Emerald Coast area docks right up to the shore, 300 yds from 316 Ohio Ave.  This beautiful all-brick home is on one of the best streets in town.  One end of the street features the local seafood market, the other features our local bank and the Post Office.  You can walk everywhere in our little town.  Eglin AFB, Florida is a short trip by car and an equally short trip by bicycle if you like.  Duke Field is a short 10 minute commute and your traveling in the opposite direction of most commuter traffic.  Come see our custom loft-style renovation.

Life in Valparaiso

It’s voting day in Valparaiso, Florida, near the Emerald Coast.  Two candidates are vying for mayor and 6 candidates are running for 2 commissioner posts.  Our small town takes its political life seriously and we generally see 90% of eligible voters voting.  It is a great community to live in with many active duty and retired military members from Eglin AFB, Hurlburt Field and Duke Field.  Valparaiso in on the north end of Choctawahatchee Bay and there are 4 bay-side parks and three fishing piers in town.  And you will not find a better house than 316 Ohio Avenue.  This Florida cottage was renovated in 2007 to take advantage of some great features in the original design.  Beautiful cypress beams were exposed and sanded and the kitchen was opened up into a culinary dream.  A Bosch gas cooktop and a Bosch convection oven are installed in beautiful custom cabinets and concrete countertops.  The stainless under-counter sink is about 14 inches deep and a slate backsplash compliments the kitchen.
